Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear, thoughtful answers to the most common questions about my mentoring approach, business strategies, and how they uniquely support creative professionals like you.

What's the difference between mentoring and coaching, and what approach do you take?
While both coaching and mentoring support your growth, they often differ in their approach. Coaching is typically focused on helping you unlock your own potential by asking powerful questions, allowing you to find your own answers. Mentoring, on the other hand, involves sharing expertise, insights, and direct guidance based on the mentor's experience.

My approach is a blend of both. I act as a mentor by sharing proven strategic and operational frameworks from my business background, guiding you through implementing these into your artistic practice. I also employ coaching techniques to help you identify your unique path, overcome internal blocks, and build the confidence to execute your plans.
How can engineering and business principles support my creative practice?
Many artists feel that business and creativity are separate, but strong parallels exist. Principles like Lean thinking, continuous improvement, and strategic planning aren't just for factories; they're about maximizing value, minimizing waste (of time, energy, resources), setting clear goals, and iterating towards success.

By applying these methodologies, we can streamline your workflow, clarify your artistic and business vision, make informed decisions, and create sustainable structures that allow you more time and freedom to focus on your art, while ensuring your business thrives. It's about bringing precision and purpose to your passion.
How does your experience as an art gallery trustee inform your mentoring?
My role as a board of trustee member for a leading UK arts organization provides invaluable insider knowledge of the art ecosystem. I understand how galleries operate, their funding structures, curatorial processes, and crucially, what they look for in artists and how professional relationships are built.

This experience allows me to offer you insights not just into general business best practices, but specifically how to strategically navigate and succeed within the art world itself, giving you a distinct advantage.
What makes your mentoring unique for artists?
My unique approach bridges the gap between creative passion and strategic business success. I apply proven principles of Lean engineering and continuous improvement, honed over years in advanced technology industries, to the specific challenges artists face.

Combined with my experience as a trustee for a leading art gallery, I offer a perspective that is both analytical and deeply empathetic to the art world, helping you build sustainable systems and strategic plans for your art business.
